A Major Semiconductor Showcase Opens in Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 on Thursday at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, bringing together global semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, researchers, start-ups and academia to showcase India's expanding capabilities across the semiconductor and electronics value chain.

A Three-Day Event With Wide Industry Backing

The event is a three-day gathering that begins Thursday and runs until September 19. It is being jointly organised by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and SEMI, the global industry association representing the semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing ecosystem, reflecting a coordinated effort between government and industry bodies to position India within the global semiconductor landscape.

This Year's Theme and Its Significance

Held under the theme "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem," SEMICON India 2026 arrives at a crucial stage in India's semiconductor journey. The confluence of sustained policy support, growing industry execution on the ground, and rising global demand for diversified and resilient supply chains has created new opportunities for the country to establish itself more firmly within the global semiconductor value chain, a sector that remains heavily concentrated among a small number of countries worldwide.

Scale of the Exhibition

The event will feature more than 600 exhibitors, including around 300 international companies, spread across 15,000 square metres of exhibition space. More than 150 speakers are expected to participate in discussions covering key developments and challenges across the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem, giving the event both a substantial commercial exhibition component and a significant knowledge-sharing dimension.

International and State-Level Participation

Six country pavilions and 12 state government pavilions will form part of the exhibition, alongside dedicated platforms for start-ups, innovation, students, workforce development and women in the semiconductor industry. The Startup Pavilion will showcase around 40 start-ups, while the Workforce Development Pavilion will focus specifically on talent, skills and career opportunities within microelectronics, reflecting an emphasis on building India's human capital pipeline for the sector alongside its manufacturing and design capabilities.

A New Value Chain Experience

A key attraction of this year's exhibition will be the new 'Sand to Silicon to Systems' Value Chain Experience, designed to offer visitors an integrated view of the semiconductor ecosystem, covering everything from raw materials and manufacturing through advanced packaging, chip design, electronics and complete systems. This end-to-end presentation format appears intended to help visitors, including policymakers and investors less familiar with the technical intricacies of chip manufacturing, understand how each stage of the value chain connects to the next.

Platforms for Emerging Talent and Ideas

The event will also feature a startup pitch competition, a student hackathon and an innovation showcase, providing dedicated platforms for emerging companies, researchers and students to present their ideas and technologies to a wider industry and investor audience.

Conference Sessions Covering Key Industry Themes

The conference programme will include keynotes, panel discussions and strategic sessions covering semiconductor manufacturing and technology, artificial intelligence, supply-chain resilience, advanced packaging, materials and equipment, chip design, research and development, start-ups, innovation and talent development, spanning both the technical and strategic dimensions currently shaping the global semiconductor industry.

A CEO Roundtable Ahead of the Main Event

Ahead of Thursday's inauguration, PM Modi held a roundtable on Wednesday with leading CEOs, urging them to participate in the next phase of India's semiconductor growth. During the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of close collaboration between the government and the semiconductor industry in shaping India's technology future, according to a PMO statement.

Building on India's Existing Strengths

Modi highlighted India's strong foundation of talent, technology adoption and infrastructure during the discussion, and called for greater industry participation in skilling, innovation and emerging technologies such as AI and quantum computing. Referring to the government's target of training one crore people in AI, he said India's talent pool, combined with the experience and capabilities of global industry leaders, could create significant opportunities for the country's continued growth in this space.

Who Attended the Roundtable

The meeting was attended by CEOs, heads and representatives of top organisations including SEMI, Micron, Infineon, Applied Materials, ASML, Merck, Tokyo Electron Ltd, Fujifilm, AMD, Intel, Tata Electronics, Lam Research, Rapidus, NXP, Foxconn, Semi Conductor Devices, Advantest, Celesta Capital, CG Power, and IBM Research, among others, drawing together a cross-section of the world's most significant semiconductor equipment makers, chip designers and manufacturers ahead of the main exhibition's opening.
