NEW DELHI — India’s automotive industry registered a swift operational recovery during FY2026, anchored by shifting consumer preferences toward Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and a double-digit rebound in commercial vehicle demand.

According to an industry analysis published by Rubix Data Sciences, SUVs and crossover utility vehicles now account for 65% of all domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales, reflecting a structural realignment from compact hatchbacks to larger utility platforms over recent years.

Key Drivers Fueling Sector Rebound

Domestic passenger vehicle sales grew by approximately 8% year-on-year in FY2026, while commercial vehicle (CV) volumes expanded by 12.5% over the same period. The broader recovery follows a brief consolidation phase during FY2025.

Industry analysts credit two major fiscal and monetary interventions for driving retail demand:

  • Tax Rationalization: The implementation of GST 2.0 effectively lowered the indirect tax burden on personal and commercial mobility platforms.

  • Monetary Easing: Interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reduced auto financing costs for retail buyers and fleet operators alike.

In the commercial segment, Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (MHCVs) increased their contribution to total CV sales from 28% to 39%, propelled by ongoing state infrastructure spending, active mining operations, and expansion in long-haul logistics networks.

Production Trajectory Under Automotive Mission Plan 2047

The structural shift aligns with targets defined under the federal Automotive Mission Plan 2047. Total national vehicle output across all segments—including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and quadricycles—is projected to rise from 34.71 million units in FY2026 to 50 million units by 2030, eventually reaching 200 million units by 2047.

India maintains its position as the third-largest global automobile market. In global manufacturing metrics, the nation ranks second in bus and coach manufacturing, third in passenger car production, and fourth in commercial vehicle output.

On the export front, passenger vehicle shipments reached a record 0.77 million units in FY2025 at a 17% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), led by compact vehicles and utility models. Market leader Maruti Suzuki recorded a 34% export surge, shipping 4.47 lakh units in FY2026. Middle Eastern trade corridors represented primary export destinations, with Saudi Arabia leading in commercial truck imports and the UAE anchoring bus shipments.

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities and Tiered Risks

Despite robust top-line expansion, market observers urge caution regarding mid-tier operational risks within the domestic supply ecosystem.

The report highlights ongoing supply chain exposure to West Asian geopolitical developments, compliance expenditure linked to tightening emissions standards, and raw material price volatility as factors requiring proactive inventory and balance sheet management. Growth momentum is expected to remain supported by federal Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, rising Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) integration, and accelerating electric vehicle (EV) fleet conversion.
