NEW DELHI, Aug 3— Former International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Willie Walsh officially took charge as the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo on Monday, as the airline aims to accelerate its next phase of international growth.

IndiGo had originally announced Walsh's appointment in March 2026. Bringing over four decades of global aviation experience, Walsh will work alongside the board and leadership team to build on the carrier’s operational foundation while guiding its strategic global ambitions.

"As IndiGo enters its third decade and stands poised for the next phase of its growth, I am delighted to officially welcome Willie as the airline's Chief Executive Officer," said Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo. "His extensive global experience in the aviation industry, combined with his operational and strategic expertise, will be instrumental as IndiGo accelerates its international expansion strategy."

Expressing optimism about his new role, Walsh highlighted India's rapid rise in the global market. "IndiGo has built a remarkable legacy over the last two decades, establishing itself among the largest airlines in the world in a short span of time," Walsh said. "With India becoming one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, the opportunities ahead for IndiGo are immense."

As CEO, Walsh will oversee overall management and strategic direction, focusing on network expansion, operational performance, commercial growth, and customer experience.

A seasoned aviation executive, Walsh began his career as a pilot at Aer Lingus, eventually serving as its CEO in 2001. He later led British Airways from 2005 to 2011, served as CEO of parent group IAG until 2020, and most recently served as Director General of IATA.

Following the development, shares of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd—IndiGo’s parent firm—traded higher at ₹5,381 during morning trade on the National Stock Exchange (NSE).
