  • Broader market hit harder: Nifty MidCap 100 slipped 0.87% and SmallCap 100 dropped 1.17%.
  • Sector drag: IT, FMCG and media stocks weighed most, while pharma ended higher.
  • Rupee weakens: The rupee fell around 30 paise to 94.81 per dollar as crude stayed above $110.
  • Key level: 22,600 is crucial support; resistance is at 22,800 and 23,000.

Indian stock markets ended lower for the third consecutive session on Thursday, with rising crude oil prices keeping investors nervous. The Sensex fell 460.30 points, or 0.62 per cent, to close at 73,249.39, while the Nifty declined 123.70 points, or 0.54 per cent, to settle at 22,687.65.

Why Crude Is the Big Worry

India imports most of its crude oil, so higher prices increase costs across the economy, from fuel and transport to manufacturing. With crude staying above $110 per barrel, experts said investors are worried about rising inflation, which could also affect future interest rate expectations.

Small Stocks Fell More

The pain was sharper in the broader market. The Nifty MidCap 100 fell 0.87 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap 100 dropped 1.17 per cent, more than the main indices. This matches what analysts had flagged earlier in the day: mid and small caps look expensive after strong liquidity-driven gains, while large caps appear more reasonably valued.

Sector Snapshot

  • Biggest drags: IT, FMCG and media stocks
  • Outperformer: Pharma, with the Nifty Pharma index ending higher
  • Top Nifty losers: Nestle India, Eternal and HDFC Life Insurance

Rupee Under Pressure

The rupee also weakened, falling around 30 paise to 94.81 against the US dollar. High crude prices and weak sentiment in stock markets weighed on the currency. Analysts expect the rupee to trade between 94.45 and 95.25 in the near term, depending on geopolitical developments and oil prices.

A weaker rupee makes imports, including oil, even costlier, adding to inflation pressure.

Technical View: Weak but Holding a Key Line

Experts said the Nifty managed to close above its 200-week moving average, but the overall trend remains weak. “The index faced strong selling pressure near its 20-DMA and failed to sustain above this crucial resistance zone. Long positions accumulated during the mean reversion rally should be reviewed if the index closes below 22,600 and its 200-WMA,” analysts said.

They added, “On the upside, immediate resistance is placed at 22,800 (20-DMA zone) and 23,000, while 22,600 remains a crucial support. A cautious, level-based trading approach is advisable.”

Why It Matters

The market has now slipped from around 23,150 on Monday morning to below 22,700, a steady slide driven by global factors rather than domestic weakness. With institutions still buying, the fall reflects caution rather than panic, but a break below 22,600 could trigger more selling.

What Comes Next

Investors will closely watch crude oil prices, developments in West Asia, the rupee and Q2 earnings. Attention will also stay on the Jio Platforms IPO, which closes on Friday.
