Govt Assures Enough Onion Stock for Domestic Demand; Kanda Express Rolls Out
Govt Assures Enough Onion Stock for Domestic Demand; Kanda Express Rolls Out

Key Highlights:

  • Government confirms onion availability is comfortable to meet domestic demand, backed by estimated 2025-26 production of 307.37 LMT — nearly flat versus 307.67 LMT last year.
  • Buffer stocks are available for calibrated market intervention, with releases based on continuous monitoring of prices and mandi arrivals.
  • Nashik-to-consumption-centres dispatches commenced August 24, initially covering Chennai, Madurai, Delhi, Kochi and Guwahati.
  • 'Kanda Express' rail movement scaled sharply — from 14 rakes/12,000 MT to five cities in 2024-25 to 86 rakes/88,000 MT to 16 cities in 2025-26.
  • Government's approach aims to balance consumer price protection with farmer interests through calibrated, data-led interventions.

Ahead of the traditional festive-season price surge, the government has stepped forward with a clear message on onion supply — the situation is comfortable, and the machinery for calibrated market intervention is already in motion. Government sources said on Monday that the Centre is closely monitoring onion prices, market arrivals and availability across states to ensure adequate supplies and shield consumers from undue price volatility. The reassurance is timely, coming as India enters the August-September window that has historically been vulnerable to onion price spikes.

The Production Math

The confidence rests on a solid production base. Onion production for 2025-26 has been estimated at 307.37 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), broadly in line with the previous year's output of 307.67 LMT. Combined with the availability of buffer stocks for calibrated market intervention, the government believes it has the arsenal needed to smoothen any short-term supply-demand mismatches over the coming months.
