India’s New Mobile Scheme to Drive Local Component Growth
India’s Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme aims to deepen backward integration and scale domestic electronics production.
NEW DELHI — India’s newly approved Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme (MPMS) is set to accelerate local value addition, trim import dependencies, and deepen backward integration across the domestic tech supply chain, industry leaders confirmed on Saturday.
The policy shift signals a transition from simple assembly operations toward deep-tier component manufacturing and domestic innovation. Data from the parallel Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) shows that policy execution is rapidly scaling up, with 106 approved projects, 38 operational manufacturing plants, and 16 facilities in advanced construction stages.
"This momentum aligns directly with industry calls to scale up operations, build robust in-house design capabilities, and secure local sourcing with world-class quality controls," said Ashok Chandak, President of SEMI India and the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA). "The operational figures confirm that this strategic pivot is already taking shape across industrial corridors."
