New Delhi: India needs to develop a cadre of trained caregivers to meet rising domestic demand for care services and to tap global opportunities for Indian caregiving professionals, according to a new report from NITI Aayog.

The report places caregivers at the centre of the care ecosystem. It recognises caregiving as a skilled, dignified and valued profession and emphasises quality of care, professional recognition, workforce welfare, institutional support, and enabling families and communities to access reliable and affordable care.

Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, said the growing global demand for caregivers presents a unique opportunity for India. He noted that the country could establish itself as a global leader in traditional caregiving, unlock substantial economic value, create employment, strengthen recognition and social security for caregivers, and reinforce its cultural and knowledge-based soft power.
