CNG, Hybrid, EVs Overtake Petrol In India's Passenger Vehicle Sales For First Time: FADA

The shift comes a little over a year after petrol held a lead of nearly 11 per cent over alternative fuels, underscoring the pace of change in India's auto market.

Why This Shift Matters

The crossover reflects a combination of factors that have been building over the past year: rising fuel-efficient CNG infrastructure in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, a wider range of affordable hybrid models from mainstream manufacturers, and falling EV battery costs bringing electric models closer to petrol price parity. For consumers, running-cost savings on CNG and hybrid variants have increasingly outweighed the higher upfront price compared to petrol counterparts — a trend automakers have leaned into by expanding their alternative-fuel model lineups faster than pure-petrol offerings.

Auto Sector Posts Record August

The auto sector witnessed its highest-ever August sales of 24,23,201 units, up 17.51 per cent year-on-year, with two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, tractors and three-wheelers all setting new records, as per FADA.

Passenger vehicle retails stood at 4,02,398 units, an increase of about 16 per cent year-on-year, marking the first time PV sales have crossed the 4-lakh mark in the month of August.

FADA Flags Base Effect, GST 2.0 Link

However, FADA cautioned that the year-on-year strength was partly flattered by a soft August 2025 base, when buyers had deferred purchases awaiting the GST 2.0 rate cut.

What Is GST 2.0: GST 2.0 refers to the Centre's revamped Goods and Services Tax structure that came into effect this year, simplifying tax slabs and, for the auto sector, lowering the effective tax burden on several vehicle categories — including a number of CNG and hybrid variants — compared to the earlier regime. Buyers who postponed purchases in 2025 anticipating this rate cut are now returning to showrooms, inflating this August's year-on-year comparison.

"The true test of the season lies in showroom conversion through September to November, not in year-on-year optics," FADA said.

FADA President Sai Giridhar said the next three months appeared optimistic, with festive conversion, the monsoon's rural after-effects, and inventory discipline the major monitorables heading into the peak season.

Outlook For September And Beyond

The auto dealers' body said the near-term outlook for September was cautiously optimistic, with festive demand and the alternative-fuel shift expected to support two-wheeler sales, while passenger vehicles enter the month with fresh launches and healthy pipelines.

Moreover, commercial vehicles are expected to firm up as post-monsoon freight, infrastructure and harvest movement resume, FADA said.

For the September-November period, 81.62 per cent of dealers expect growth, 17.09 per cent expect a flat market, and 1.28 per cent expect de-growth, according to the auto industry body.
