September 29, 2026: India is on track to add more than 60 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2026, building on the country’s rapid expansion of clean energy, said Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman and CEO, ReNew, while addressing a high-level session at the United Nations General Assembly during New York Climate Week.

Sinha, the only private-sector leader to address the session, highlighted India’s progress in scaling renewable energy and underscored the critical role of businesses in translating national and global climate commitments into action.

He noted that India achieved its Paris Agreement target of having 50% of its energy mix from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025 — five years ahead of its 2030 target. India added around 44 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2025, making it the second-largest annual addition globally, and is expected to surpass that significantly this year.

Distributed renewables bringing the energy transition closer to citizens

Sinha said a significant share of the capacity addition expected in 2026 will come from distributed renewable energy, including nearly 15 GW of rooftop solar and solar pumps.
