India Job Market Resilient Amid Sector-Specific Hiring

Therapy-related postings rose more than 18 per cent, while food preparation and service roles also recorded growth above 18 per cent. Job openings for physicians and surgeons increased by over 17 per cent. Sports-related positions and medical technician roles each advanced by more than 15 per cent.

“India’s formal labour market continues to demonstrate resilience despite some moderation in hiring activity over recent months. What we’re seeing is not a broad-based slowdown, but a labour market that is becoming increasingly sector-specific,” said Callam Pickering, Senior Economist, APAC at Indeed.

Technology hiring has entered a phase of recalibration after several years of rapid expansion. The report recorded three-month declines of 18 per cent in software development, 18 per cent in IT infrastructure, operations and support, 16 per cent in data and analytics, and 15 per cent in IT systems and solutions.

These soft patches in technology were offset by the gains in healthcare and consumer-facing sectors. Pickering noted that formal-sector jobs generally provide better wages, greater security and clearer career paths, describing the structural shift as positive for workers and the wider economy.

“This ongoing shift is one reason India’s job market continues to outperform many other Indeed markets, with hiring activity remaining well above pre-pandemic levels,” he added.

The data portray a labour market that is adjusting rather than contracting. While overall postings have moderated in recent months, the sustained elevation relative to pre-pandemic benchmarks and the broadening of demand into healthcare and service occupations suggest underlying strength in formal employment.
