Every runway show has two versions of itself. There's the one the audience sees - the lights, the models, the finished look. And there's the one that happens an hour earlier, in a cramped backstage room where dozens of artists are racing against the clock to make that finished look possible.
Shabana Subhani's career has spanned beauty, fashion, content and creative direction - with backstage becoming one of the most important chapters of that journey. Today, she leads it.
She Didn't Plan for the BBC. She Noticed a Gap.
Subhani doesn't describe her entrepreneurial journey as a lightning-bolt moment. It came from years of quietly observing how backstage beauty teams actually function - often under pressure, often understaffed, and often missing the one thing she felt mattered most: structure built around people.
"Great backstage beauty requires much more than technical skill," she explains. "It needs leadership, communication, preparation, teamwork - and an environment where people feel respected and valued."
That observation became the blueprint for BBC - a creative platform bringing together beauty direction, structure, talent and community, positioned around creative direction and backstage beauty production rather than makeup services alone.
Building a Career Later in Life - On Purpose
What sets Subhani's story apart from the usual founder narrative is timing. She built Backstage Beauty Collective in her 40s, after already navigating separate chapters as a creative, a content creator and a mother.
Rather than treat that as a late start, she treats it as the reason the business works. "Starting something new in my forties taught me that ambition doesn't have an expiry date," she says. "You don't have to have everything figured out at 25, or follow somebody else's timeline."

BBC's credibility didn't come from theory - it came from delivering at scale. Subhani served as Beauty Creative Lead – Backstage for Asian Bridal Fest UK 2026, coordinating beauty direction across a production with around 40 models, multiple designers, and a full team of artists working simultaneously.
The experience, she says, tested every part of her approach: preparation, communication and the coordination needed to keep a large production moving without losing quality.
She's since expanded into education as well, launching BBC's first Runway Beauty Masterclass in London alongside Modest Fashion Week London - a session built around the parts of the industry rarely discussed publicly: leadership, professionalism, and what actually happens in the hour before a show starts.
Her visibility has grown alongside the business. In 2026, she was recognised as Best London Influencer & Blogger at the Chaand Raat celebrations, later earning a nomination for Creative Director & Beauty Innovator of the Year, and an invitation to the House of Lords for a gathering celebrating women in business.
Why "Collective" Isn't Just a Name
Subhani is deliberate about language, and the word "Collective" carries weight in how she runs the company. It's not built to center one founder - it's built to distribute opportunity
"I don't believe another person's success takes anything away from mine," she says. "If someone receives an opportunity, makes an important connection, or grows because they were part of something we created, I see that as a success for the BBC too."
That philosophy shapes how she brings emerging artists into productions alongside established professionals, treating mentorship as part of the business model rather than a side project.
Where BBC Goes From Here
Subhani is candid that BBC is still early in its story. Her plans include expanding across more fashion weeks and creative productions internationally, while growing the education side of the business through additional masterclasses and mentoring programs.
But she's equally clear that scale isn't the metric she's chasing. "Growth for me isn't simply about doing more shows or becoming bigger," she says. "It's about becoming better, more established, and more valuable to the people and productions we work with."
Her Closing Thought
Asked what she'd want readers to take away from her story, Subhani doesn't talk about beauty at all - she talks about permission.
"Don't underestimate what can still begin," she says. "Sometimes the chapter that changes you begins much later than you expected... I'm simply building the next chapter, one opportunity, one lesson and one brave decision at a time."
