India Needs 1.32 Million EV Charging Points by 2030: Report

 Key Highlights

  • India will need 1.32 million EV charging points by 2030, against 67,657 as of August 2026.
  • Public charging stations have grown nearly six-fold since 2022 to 29,151 as of December 2025.
  • Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh lead national deployment.
  • Top 10 states account for 78 per cent of the charging network.
  • Nearly 73 per cent of India's chargers are still rated below 30 kW.

India's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure story is heading into one of its most consequential decades. According to a new report from Rubix Data Sciences citing estimates from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), India will need 1.32 million EV charging points by 2030 to support its rapidly electrifying vehicle fleet. Against the 67,657 chargers installed as of August 2026, the numbers point to a genuinely massive build-out ahead — one that combines enormous market opportunity with meaningful structural challenges that industry participants will need to address carefully.

For automakers, charge point operators, utilities, real estate players, policymakers and EV consumers alike, the coming years will be shaped by exactly how successfully this build-out is executed.
