Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in Australia can now undergo a seamless, paperless credential authentication process. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), through its National e-Governance Division (NeGD), has partnered with the Association of Australian Education Representatives in India (AAERI) to launch 'AAERI Verify', an integrated digital verification platform powered by DigiLocker.
Unveiled at the AAERI Annual Convention in New Delhi, the initiative connects India’s robust Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) directly with Australian higher education admissions workflows. The platform allows applicants to securely share issuer-verified academic, identity, and financial records, eliminating the cumbersome reliance on physical documentation and manual verification.
The newly introduced digital workflow restructures the traditional vetting pipeline into two distinct, consent-based operational phases:

Student Check: Executed prior to the formal application submission, this stage verifies the applicant’s academic achievements, identity credentials, and foundational qualifications directly from primary issuing databases.

Sponsor Check: Initiated immediately following the receipt of an admission offer, this secondary phase verifies financial backing and sponsorship documents to confirm authentic funding sources.
By leveraging direct API connections between DigiLocker and issuing authorities, the platform guarantees that records transferred to Australian institutions carry valid digital signatures from source organizations.
Fraud Prevention and Operational Efficiency
Manual credential verification has historically introduced bottlenecks in the overseas education pathway, often subjecting institutions to risks associated with fraudulent documentation and prolonged processing cycles.
"With the explicit consent of the student, DigiLocker will provide Australian universities direct access to digitally signed records from original issuing authorities," MeitY stated in an official release. "This eliminates the risk of fraud, ensures absolute data privacy, and cuts down application processing times drastically."
During the official unveiling, JL Gupta, Director at NeGD, delivered a comprehensive technical presentation detailing the foundational architecture supporting India's DPI ecosystem. NeGD, an independent business division under MeitY, provides macro-level project management, policy frameworks, and technical appraisals for national infrastructure.
Gupta highlighted that NeGD's digital validation pipelines already support high-stakes public workflows across major statutory bodies, including NITI Aayog, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Extending this framework to cross-border educational verification marks an expansion in international DPI deployment.
Leveraging National Digital Infrastructure
DigiLocker stands as one of India's flagship public technology platforms. Operating as a secure digital wallet, it currently serves over 72 crore (720 million) registered users across the country. The platform enables real-time issuance, retrieval, and verification of official documents issued by thousands of government departments, educational boards, and financial institutions.
For international education stakeholders, the integration of DigiLocker with 'AAERI Verify' addresses critical compliance and data governance standards. Because document access requires explicit, time-bound consent from the student, data privacy is maintained throughout the admissions cycle while reducing verification turnaround times from weeks to minutes.
The rollout is expected to benefit thousands of Indian scholars applying to Australian universities annually, providing a secure, transparent, and fully digital bridge between Indian issuing bodies and Australian admissions offices.
