The FASTag Annual Pass, launched for private vehicle owners on Independence Day last year, has crossed the one crore mark, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry said on Monday.
The pass can be used at about 1,150 fee plazas on National Highways and National Expressways. It removes the need for frequent FASTag recharges through a one-time fee valid for one year or 200 toll crossings.
The growth has not been steady; it has accelerated. In mid-March 2026, the pass had more than 56 lakh users. Crossing one crore now means about 44 lakh users joined in roughly six months, almost as many as in the first seven months after launch.
What It Costs Now
The pass was launched at ₹3,000. From April 1, 2026, the fee was revised to ₹3,075 for the financial year 2026–27, under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.
The Math Per Toll
At ₹3,075 for 200 crossings, each toll plaza crossing costs about ₹15.40 if a user completes all 200 crossings within the year. For regular highway users, that is where the savings come from.
But the value depends on how much you travel. Once either the 200 crossings are used up or the one-year validity ends, the FASTag automatically returns to normal pay-per-use mode. Occasional highway users who cross only a handful of toll plazas a year may not recover the fee.
Who Can Buy It and How
The pass is available for all non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans with a valid FASTag. After the one-time payment through the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website, the pass is activated on the existing FASTag linked to the vehicle within two hours.
OneTag: Change Your Issuer, Keep Your Tag
Separately, NHAI said last month that OneTag, a FASTag portability service, is now available on the Rajmargyatra app. It allows users to switch their FASTag issuer while keeping the tag already fixed on their vehicle, so there is no need to buy a new physical tag.
How to port your FASTag:
- Log in to the Rajmargyatra app and enter your vehicle registration number to check eligibility.
- Enter the six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) sent by your current issuer bank.
- Select a new issuer.
- Complete customer verification and wallet onboarding with the new issuer.
With over 98% penetration and around 13 crore users, FASTag has transformed electronic toll collection in the country.
Why It Matters: Tolling Becomes Subscription-Style
The Annual Pass is changing how many private car owners think about highway tolls: from paying per trip to paying once a year, much like a subscription. The sharp pickup in adoption suggests frequent travellers find the model convenient and cost-effective.
OneTag adds another consumer-friendly layer. Just as mobile number portability lets users switch telecom operators, FASTag portability lets users move to a bank or issuer that offers better service, without the hassle of replacing the tag.
Should You Buy It?
- Worth considering: If you regularly drive on National Highways or Expressways, such as weekly intercity trips.
- May not pay off: If you use toll roads only a few times a year.
- Remember: It is valid only at the roughly 1,150 plazas covered, on National Highways and National Expressways, and only for non-commercial vehicles.
One crore users in just over a year shows the FASTag Annual Pass has found its audience among frequent highway travellers. With OneTag portability added, the government is pushing tolling further towards simple, digital and user-friendly options.
