Most airlines that start flying long-haul get caught up in it. New routes, new cabins and new aircraft types tend to pull money and management attention away from the business that made them successful. On Tuesday, IndiGo's new chief executive made it clear he wants to avoid that.

Speaking at the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 conference in New Delhi, Willie Walsh said IndiGo will keep its core short-haul business as the priority even as it speeds up its international expansion. His point was simple: the airline's global plans should not distract from the domestic and regional network that supports its low-cost model.

"We must ensure we do not lose focus on the work required to maintain a highly efficient short-haul operation while preparing for future opportunities," Walsh said.
