Indian markets traded lower in early deals on Wednesday as investors stayed cautious ahead of the Reserve Bank of India's monetary policy decision.
Sensex opened at 72,965.38 and fell as much as 462.44 points, or 0.63%, to 72,605.37. Nifty opened at 22,690.45 and declined 175.65 points, or 0.77%, to 22,600.
The dip follows a strong recovery. According to analysts, Nifty had rallied 558 points from last Thursday's low before Wednesday's pause.
"This rally will face headwinds, constraining a sustained up move. Brent crude is back above $101 and there are no signs of any reversal in FPI outflows. Domestic liquidity and expectations of good Q2 numbers are supporting the market," they said.
Sectors
Consumer Durables fell the most at 1.55%, followed by Metal (−1.34%) and Auto (over −1%). PSU Bank, Oil & Gas, Realty and FMCG also declined. Pharma, Healthcare and Media were among the few gainers.
Why It Matters: The Hike Is Not the Story, the Message Is
Analysts were clear that the rate hike itself is not what markets are waiting for. "A 25 bp hike in policy rates is inevitable and already discounted by the market. What is not discounted is the monetary stance and the central bank's view on the emerging growth-inflation dynamics," they said.
The key concern is the rupee. With US yields and the dollar rising, the interest rate gap between India and the US has narrowed to very low levels. When that gap shrinks, foreign investors have less reason to keep money in India, adding pressure on the rupee. "A rate hike to preempt further capital flight has become unavoidable," experts said, adding that rupee stability will be high on the RBI Governor's mind.
For borrowers, a hike would likely mean higher EMIs on floating-rate loans in the months ahead.
A Double Event Day
Wednesday is busy on the economic calendar. Alongside the RBI decision, the GST Council meets to consider process reforms aimed at simplifying compliance. Together, the two decisions could shape both borrowing costs and business costs.
Key Levels
| Level |
|---|
| Upside targets | 22,930, then 23,100–23,220 |
| Key level to hold | 22,690 |
| Dip support | 22,574 |
| Lower limit seen | ~22,050 |
Technical analysts remained hopeful of further gains as long as dips stay above 22,574.
Global Cues
Asian markets were mixed. Wall Street closed higher on Tuesday as oil stabilised and Treasury yields eased. Crude rose on Wednesday amid a storm approaching key US production areas and Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, balanced against rising Middle East exports.
The Bottom Line
Markets have already accepted a rate hike. What they want now is clarity: how worried the RBI is about inflation, growth and the rupee. The Governor's words may move markets more than the hike itself.
