Mumbai: Indian equity benchmarks began Tuesday on a cautious note, weighed down by mixed global cues, elevated crude oil prices and the continuing West Asia conflict. The Sensex opened at 73,484.38, down 122.37 points or 0.17 per cent, while the Nifty started the session at 22,708.80, lower by 44.40 points or 0.20 per cent.

The early selling was concentrated in IT, cement and oil & gas stocks. Nifty IT fell more than 1 per cent, Nifty Cement declined 0.98 per cent and Nifty Oil & Gas slipped 0.53 per cent. Among Nifty constituents, Infosys, Asian Paints, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), JSW Steel and HCL Tech were among the top losers, falling up to 2.78 per cent.

Defensive and banking pockets offered some support. Nifty PSU Bank gained 0.68 per cent, Nifty Pharma rose 0.44 per cent and Nifty Healthcare traded 0.39 per cent higher, suggesting investors were rotating towards safer sectors rather than exiting the market altogether.
