Indian stock markets opened sharply higher on Thursday. The rally was not driven by anything at home. It came from two overseas developments: a clear outcome in the US midterm elections and a steep fall in crude oil prices.

The Sensex opened at 78,910.94, up 1,609.54 points or 2.08 per cent. The Nifty started the session at 24,378.05, a gain of 417.45 points or 1.74 per cent. Financial stocks led the move, with Nifty Private Bank rising more than 2 per cent and Nifty Realty adding 1.86 per cent. Nifty Cement, Auto, IT, Oil & Gas and PSU Banks gained up to 1.82 per cent. FMCG, consumer durables, metal, media and chemicals rose between 1 and 1.5 per cent. All sectoral indices were in the green.

Why falling oil matters more than the election result

The US election set the mood, but for India the bigger story is the drop in crude. Brent fell nearly 10 per cent and settled below the $100-per-barrel mark. India imports most of the crude it uses, so a fall of this size can ease pressure on the import bill, inflation expectations and the rupee. That explains why oil-sensitive sectors such as auto, cement and paints-linked consumer stocks rose alongside banks.
