Indian equities closed higher for a fifth straight session on Wednesday. The Nifty ended just short of 24,000, a round number traders have been watching closely, so the session was solid but not quite a breakout.
The Sensex advanced 383.55 points, or 0.5 per cent, to settle at 77,301.40. The Nifty gained 149.75 points, or 0.63 per cent, to finish at 23,960.60. Buying in FMCG, realty and metal stocks drove the move, and investors kept adding shares across a broad range of sectors.
The strongest gains came outside the frontline indices. The Nifty MidCap 100 climbed 1.55 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 surged 2 per cent, more than three times the Nifty's gain. When smaller stocks rise this much faster than large-caps, it usually means investors are willing to take on more risk.
Among Nifty constituents, Bharat Electronics, Adani Enterprises and Titan Company were the top gainers. Sector-wise, Nifty Media, Nifty Metal, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Realty led the market higher.
Technology stocks went the other way. Nifty IT fell more than 1 per cent and was the worst-performing sectoral index of the day. Experts said strength in consumption-linked, real estate and commodity shares more than offset the weakness in tech. Money is moving towards domestic-facing sectors, while export-heavy IT stays under pressure.
The 24,000 question
Despite five days of buying, the Nifty could not close above the psychological resistance of 24,000. Analysts say this level now decides whether the rally continues or pauses.
"A decisive and sustained breakout above this level could strengthen bullish momentum and pave the way for further upside," analysts stated.
On the other side, they pointed to a cushion for the bulls. "On the downside, 23,750–23,700 now forms the immediate support zone. Holding above this range will be important to sustain the ongoing positive momentum," market watchers noted.
What's fuelling the optimism
According to analysts, three domestic factors are supporting sentiment: hopes of possible tax relief in the upcoming Union Budget, better-than-expected quarterly earnings, and resilient festive-season consumption. Together, these explain why consumption-linked and real estate stocks have been leading the market.
Analysts do not expect the rally to be smooth. "Going forward, earnings visibility and crude prices will remain key drivers; selective stock-specific positioning is advisable amid geopolitical uncertainty," market watchers noted.
For now, the market has momentum and investors are taking on more risk, but the Nifty still has to close above 24,000. A move above that level would confirm the trend. A slip below 23,700 would suggest the five-day run is running out of steam.
