Global AI Security Market to Hit $4.8 Billion in 2027; $7.7 Billion by 2028: Gartner

Key Highlights:

  • Global market for securing AI projected to reach almost $4.8 billion in 2027, a 68.7 per cent increase over 2026, per Gartner.
  • Market forecast to reach nearly $7.7 billion by 2028 as enterprises race to secure AI systems.
  • AI application security to remain the largest spending category in 2027 at nearly $851 million; AI usage control at $749 million.
  • AI usage control to see the largest growth at 73 per cent, followed by AI gateway at 70.9 per cent.
  • By 2029, over half of successful cyberattacks on AI agents are expected to exploit access control weaknesses and prompt injections.

As enterprises across the world race to embed artificial intelligence into their core operations, an equally important — and less glamorous — story is unfolding in parallel: the accelerating spend on securing that AI. According to a Gartner report released on Wednesday, the global market for securing AI is projected to reach almost $4.8 billion in 2027, a 68.7 per cent increase over 2026. By 2028, the market is expected to expand further to nearly $7.7 billion. Behind these headline numbers lies a much deeper industrial reality — that the enterprise AI revolution is now inseparable from the enterprise AI security revolution.

Why This Market Is Exploding

Shailendra Upadhyay, senior principal analyst at Gartner, offered a clear framing of the drivers behind this surge. "This surge is driven by the urgent need for enterprises to secure AI systems, address emerging vulnerabilities and strengthen defenses against sophisticated cyberthreats," he said. That single sentence captures a truth that is becoming increasingly self-evident — AI is no longer just a productivity tool. It is now a first-class attack surface, deserving of a first-class defensive framework.
