The Ayush Ministry is now advancing artificial intelligence (AI) as the next frontier for Ayurveda and the wider Ayush sector, it said on Saturday, marking a significant step in bringing modern computing technology into a domain traditionally rooted in ancient medical and wellness systems.
The ministry said it has been exploring AI across healthcare, research, education, information services and investment facilitation, with an emerging ecosystem that includes both specialised AI applications and broader collaborations with national AI initiatives, indicating a multi-pronged strategy rather than a narrow, single-purpose deployment of the technology.
The ministry's broader AI ecosystem is being advanced through participation in the IndiaAI Innovation Challenge, with a focus on developing AI-enabled solutions tailored specifically to the Ayush sector's unique needs and terminology, rather than adapting generic healthcare AI tools without customisation.
Key Healthcare Use Cases
Key use cases include voice-based Electronic Health Records, disease-trend detection, and personalised treatment-support solutions, aimed at leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance healthcare delivery, clinical insights and patient-centric care across Ayurveda and other Ayush systems, according to an official statement. These use cases reflect an effort to modernise record-keeping and diagnostic support within traditional medicine practice, areas that have historically relied heavily on manual documentation and practitioner experience alone.
Collaboration With National AI Bodies
The ministry has collaborated with IndiaAI and the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), creating opportunities to explore artificial intelligence, language technologies, digital health and advanced computing specifically for the Ayush ecosystem, tying this sector-specific AI push into the broader national AI infrastructure and expertise being developed across the government.
Making Ministry Resources Available for Wider Research
The ministry's artefacts are now available on AI Kosh to support wider AI research and dissemination in the Ayush and Ayurveda domains, a move that could help extend the benefits of the ministry's AI development work beyond its own internal projects to the broader research community working in this space.
Expanding Language Access Through Bhashini
Through the Bhashini collaboration, Ayush Grid portals, including those serving Ayurveda practitioners, students and citizens, are now available in 22 scheduled languages of India, enabling wider participation and reach across the country's significant linguistic diversity, it mentioned. This multilingual expansion is particularly significant given how much of Ayurveda's traditional knowledge and terminology is rooted in regional languages and Sanskrit-derived vocabulary that may not translate easily or accurately without dedicated language technology support.
A Citizen-Facing Chatbot for Ayush Information
At the citizen-facing level, the MAISP Chatbot is designed to make Ayush-related information, including Ayurveda, readily accessible through a conversational interface, offering everyday citizens an easier entry point into understanding and accessing Ayush-related services and knowledge.
Supporting Researchers and Students
The ARP Research Assistant, a GenAI-based assistant, extends the Ayush Research Portal, helping researchers navigate Ayurveda and other Ayush literature more effectively, a tool that could meaningfully speed up literature review and knowledge discovery for researchers working across the various Ayush disciplines.
The eLMS Chatbot introduces AI-based Student Life Cycle Management for Ayurveda and other Ayush education institutions, extending AI's application from clinical and research contexts into the administrative and educational management side of the sector as well.
A Chatbot for the Medicinal Plant Trade
The e-CHARAK Chatbot functions as a medicinal-plant trade assistant, connecting conversational AI with the ecosystem that underpins Ayurvedic pharmacology, addressing a specific and practical need within the supply chain that supports Ayurvedic medicine production, an area that involves considerable complexity given the vast range of medicinal plants used across different Ayurvedic formulations.
Yoga Recommendations and Investment Support
Moreover, Yoga Saarthi serves as a yoga recommendation AI chatbot, while Nivesh Saarthi serves as an AI assistant for investment in the Ayush sector, extending the ministry's AI tools into both wellness guidance for individual users and investment facilitation for businesses and investors interested in the sector.
A Broader Shift Toward Interactive AI Services
Together, these chatbots demonstrate the expansion of Ayush Grid from digital portals toward interactive, intelligent and user-oriented AI services, reflecting a deliberate evolution in how the ministry approaches digital engagement, moving from largely static, information-only platforms toward more responsive, conversational tools capable of directly assisting practitioners, students, researchers, investors and citizens alike across the full breadth of the Ayush ecosystem.
